REVEIW: Stop This Train @ Cafe Carlyle

It is impossible not to root for Clint Holmes, the longtime Las Vegas headliner whose determined campaign to establish himself as a New York cabaret star has brought him to the Café Carlyle for three consecutive years. His first two engagements were ambitious tributes to Bobby Short in 2011 and to Paul Simon and Cole Porter the year after.
On Oct. 1, Mr. Holmes offered the premiere of an autobiographical show, “Stop This Train,” whose title comes from the John Mayer song about fear of aging and the desire to hold back time. The song turns on a father’s sardonic warning to his son: “He said, ’Turn 68, you’ll renegotiate.’ ” Mr. Holmes, who is 67 and has the stamina and drive of a dynamo half his age, fearlessly zeroed in on the message of the song...
